For most homeowners, it’s pretty close to a worst-case scenario. The AC turns on but refuses to cool things down on a hot summer day. Should you call an AC repair company or try to get the unit working again yourself? Surprisingly, your options may be wide open. We’ll now take a look at what to do if your AC is not blowing cold air.
Check the Thermostat
An incorrectly set thermostat can be why cold air isn’t blowing. Check if the thermostat is switched to “Auto” (if so, change the setting to “On”). Another possibility is it’s set to “Heat”. In that case, it will never signal the AC to supply cool air. Switching it to “Cool” should get your home to a comfortable temperature.
Also, check the temperature setting on the thermostat. Your AC won’t run if the threshold is set too high. Lowering it should get the unit to kick in and start providing cool air within a few minutes. If these steps don’t help, check the thermostat’s power supply, batteries, or internal wires. Call for help when there’s a power issue, changing the batteries doesn’t get it working again, or a wire is frayed or damaged.
Change the AC Filter
People often believe the AC filter only traps dirt, dust, and dander. But a filter helps the system work properly. A clogged filter restricts airflow and prevents the unit from delivering cool air. It may also cause dustier air in your home. Over time, the added strain can damage vital parts of your air conditioner.
The filter should be checked at least once every 30 days. Therefore, you can prevent airflow and cooling issues before it gets too dirty. Change the air filter every 1 to 3 months, depending on the system, the air quality in your home, and the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Clear the Drain Line
A central AC system removes moisture and humidity from the air it cools. It collects excess moisture via a pan and drainpipe. The pipe in an HVAC system is often ignored. But it can collect dirt and debris, and algae can build up inside. Then dirty water can backflow and cause mold, a flood, or water damage.
Check the drain line if your AC is not blowing cool air. If it’s dirty or clogged, turn your AC off and clean the line out with distilled white vinegar. However, hot water alone may be enough to clear it. Follow any recommendations by the manufacturer for clearing the drain line or call a professional for assistance.
Clean the Condenser Unit
The outdoor unit can collect dirt and debris on top or inside. You can clean it with soap and water or a garden hose with light pressure. Installing a weatherproof cover can protect the unit from additional dirt buildup. If working inside the condenser unit, gently clean the coils and fins to improve heat transfer. And keep trees and shrubs trimmed back a few feet on all sides to limit the amount of buildup and avoid airflow issues.
Check for a Refrigerant Leak
Signs of a refrigerant leak include a hissing noise when the AC turns on. Listen carefully to your unit if it’s not blowing cold air, it takes a long time to get your home cool, or the air conditioner runs for a long time. If you confirm a leak, turn off the AC and call an HVAC professional to fix the problem.
Look for a Frozen Coil
Air conditioners are designed to cool homes. However, they shouldn’t freeze or have ice or frost. An AC coil usually freezes because it is dirty, which prevents it from absorbing heat. The initial cause is often a clogged filter (another reason to check the filter regularly). Other reasons include low refrigerant, a blocked condensate line, or an incorrect thermostat setting. Check for issues you can fix yourself. But if there’s a refrigerant issue, damage, or a malfunction, call an AC repair company.
Schedule Maintenance
