An electrical panel can be expected to last 20 to 25 years. In some homes, it may be 30, 40, or 60 years since it’s been installed. If so, it’s time to contact Sky for electrical panel replacement. But age isn’t the only factor; safety standards and electrical demands have changed. The condition of your electrical system is also a serious concern. Here are 10 signs it’s time to consider replacing your electrical panel.
1. Circuit Breakers Trip Repeatedly
Circuit breakers cut power when the current running through them exceeds a safe threshold. An overload, faulty wiring, a problem with the electrical panel, or bad breaker can cause it to trip. If the same breaker keeps tripping, the problem is likely isolated to that part. Look for the breaker’s designation; if it’s labeled 1 Pole, it should only have one connection. If breakers trip and any of these other signs are present, replace the panel.
2. The Panel Appears Scorched Inside
If it looks, and smells, like something has burnt, the panel is unsafe to use. The odor might be similar to burnt plastic or wood. Scorching is a sure sign something has overheated, whether it’s a wire, its insulation, or a mechanical component. A malfunctioned part or power surge can burn the panel. If not fixed, the problem can lead to an electrical arc that sparks a fire.
3. Buzzing and Other Sounds
An electrical panel should make no sound except for when a breaker pops. Buzzing or hissing sounds indicate a loose connection or a bad wire. If you act quickly, you might get away with just replacing the faulty wire. But it can quickly do damage to the panel and its internal connections, and you’ll need electrical panel replacement to restore power and safety.
4. The Panel Is Rusted
Rust is a clear indication of water damage. Water and electricity don’t mix, so it’s safe to assume your electrical panel is a danger to use. In this case, replacement may not be enough. Find the cause of the water damage to stop any future issues. You may need a pipe or plumbing issue fixed or a roof leak repaired.
5. Lights Flicker or Dim When You Plug Something In
An underpowered electrical panel is often strained when you see lights flicker or dim in intensity. Faulty wiring is another possibility. While LED lights can flicker if on for a long time, in any other case, schedule an electrical inspection because there’s likely a problem somewhere in the system.
6. It Uses Fuses Instead of Breakers
Fuses are small circular components that serve each circuit. They’re designed to blow instead of switch off, and are no longer up to code. Fuse boxes do not comply with minimum electrical standards. In fact, they can reduce property value and are a safety risk. The panel is already overloaded once a fuse blows.
7. The Panel Is Damaged
Electrical panels, as important as they are, are out of the way and easily avoidable. But if something strikes the panel or falls on it, have it checked out right away. Any amount of damage can put your family in severe danger.
8. It Feels Warm or Hot
An electrical panel is designed to prevent overheating. If it feels warm or hot to the touch, the system is not doing its job. There’s definitely something wrong, so call an electrician immediately. Electrical panel replacement may be the only way out of a precarious situation.
9. Wiring Is Old, Worn, or Messy
If your wiring looks old, worn out, or the insulation is stripped or melted, replace it right away. Ungrounded wiring is a danger as well. Also replace messy wiring in which multiple electrical connections are made outside the electrical panel. In older homes, wires are often tied into several branch legs and combined into one big circuit. This is not only a code violation, but a serious hazard.
10. You’re Using Multiple Power Strips
If you are overloading power strips, you probably lack electrical outlets. A power strip can be dangerous in homes where several rooms are on the same circuit. Exceeding that circuit’s amperage will trip the breaker. Plugging in multiple appliances on the same circuit should be avoided too. If you don’t have enough outlets, upgrading the electrical panel may be the best approach.
Contact Sky Heating, AC, Plumbing & Electrical
If it’s time for an upgrade, our electrical technicians can install a 100-, 150-, or 200-amp service panel. This is an especially important consideration if you notice any of the above signs, purchase a new appliance, and/or remodel your home. Electrical panel replacement increases power capacity, improves energy efficiency, and can lower maintenance costs. It may even lower your insurance premium.
